Finally, spring is upon us! After months of being bundled up and stuck inside we are all bursting at the seams to get outside and enjoy the weather, and so are our pets! With increased outdoor activity, there are multiple ways to ensure your pet will make his or her way back to you if they happen to wander too far away.
The easiest way of identification is a tag which states your phone number and/or address. Inscribed tags are available at many retail stores as well as various places online. This is Fluffy’s way of saying “have your people call my people.” There are also personalized collars available on various websites as well. Other forms of identification tags can be your rabies vaccine tag from your veterinary clinic and even your city license. These tags are inscribed with an i.d number that is unique to your pet and with one call to the clinic or town hall your Fluffy will be on her way home. Want another source of identification? Microchip is the solution! It also serves as a great additional form of identification in case the collar falls off, tags break, etc. while Fluffy is
off running as a free spirit. A microchip is not a G.P.S implanted under your pet’s skin. You will not be able to track Fluffy using this device. The microchip is roughly the size of a grain of rice that gets implanted under your pet’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades but they have been known to migrate under the skin. When Fluffy is found and brought to a vet clinic, rescue or city pound, a microchip scanner is ran over Fluffy’s body. Once the chip is detected, an identification number is then viewed on the scanner. This number can be entered into an online database and the owner’s information can be found.
Here at Petcetera, we use the HomeAgain Microchip. There is a one-time administration and registration fee. We have you fill out the information you want for your pet and we register the chip online for you. Once it is registered, it is registered for life. When the chip is registered, an online profile is created for you. Using this profile, always keep your contact information up to date in the event of a change in phone number or address. For an annual fee, you can receive extra bonuses, but this is not necessary. Pet identification is always a good idea no matter what the case; indoor cats can always decide to make a break out the front door, Fluffy can always get spooked and jump out of your arms and take off, leashes can always break. Please consider all these options to keep Fluffy safe and at home.
